Dr. Lauren Albin
Tell us about your professional background.
“Prior to dental school, I managed an anesthesiologist’s office in Norfolk, NE, my hometown. This was a really great experience, because I had the opportunity to learn the “behind the scenes” of an office, managed insurance authorizations, and learned the importance of interdisciplinary communication within the medical professions.“
What is your educational background?
“I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I graduated with a minor in Gerontology and a B.A. in Piano Performance under Dr. Paul Barnes. While completing my major, I simultaneously took all the science courses required for dental school. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to end up in the medical field. I grew up in a family of physicians and so I always knew the importance of healthcare. However, I always had a love for music and wanted to pick a major in which I could perfect a talent that would be useful for a lifetime and bring joy to myself and others!“
What areas of dentistry do you enjoy?
“I love making beautiful smiles. I think I resonate so much with this aspect of dentistry, because of my personal life-change after years of orthodontic treatment. It’s amazing how much a composite veneer or crown can brighten someone’s smile and boost their confidence. My favorite moments are when patients who rarely smile, leave the office beaming from ear to ear, saying they’ve never been so happy or confident. I also love pediatric dentistry, because kids are HILARIOUS and I love creating a positive and fun atmosphere for kiddos.”
Why should patients see you at their next appointment?
“I strive to make you feel comfortable and will clearly communicate what is happening along the way. I want my patients to be onboard with their overall health! I want them to have the knowledge so they can impact their friends and family. “
Why did you choose dentistry?
“As a child, I spent about 8 years in and out of my orthodontist’s office. During that time, my curiosity was piqued! My orthodontist made such a huge difference in my life by enhancing my confidence in my smile. As I explored the dental field, I absolutely loved the opportunity to combine science and artistry into one. Additionally, the opportunity to get to know families over a lifetime was really important to me. At the end of the day, relationships are the most important thing in life. I realized that if I could brighten someone’s smile, and invest in people’s lives, dentistry was the perfect career fit for me.”
How can you impact overall wellness as a dentist?
“By educating patients on healthy lifestyles and great oral care, patients will see they can not only achieve a beautiful smile, but also an improved overall sense of well-being. It’s never too late to make positive changes in your life!”
Can you tell us about your family in a few sentences?
“I grew up in Norfolk, NE, where my parents are both OB/GYNs. My sister Brittany lives in New York City and is an actor/singer and runs an amazing travel company called- EVE Vacations. People more often mistake us for twins! Family gatherings are highlighted by lots of laughter, singing around the piano, and cooking our favorite Lebanese food.“
What are your favorite techniques to make patients feel comfortable during treatment?
“I like to connect with my patients on a personal level. It’s super important to me because this develops a level of trust and a good report. Also, educating my patients and explaining dental terms in a way that makes sense is a great way to help patients feel at ease. “
What is your proudest accomplishment?
“Summer 2019 I received an international travel grant to go to Brazil and develop a research collaboration with UNMC and a dental school in Brazil. This trip was an absolutely incredible experience! I’ve always loved meeting people from other cultures, so getting the opportunity to make connections and build friendships with dentists in other countries was amazing.“
How do you spend your free time? What are your hobbies?
“In my free time, I love training for half-marathons and trying out all of Lincoln’s boutique fitness studios! I enjoy playing classical music and performing with friends at weddings and other events. On the weekends, you will often find me at a Husker sporting event, out to eat with friends enjoying Lincoln’s great restaurants, or at a local concert or Lied center event. Also, for the last 10 years, I’ve truly loved the community of people at my church.”
Best anti-aging advice?
“Wear sunscreen daily. Spend time with positive people. Move for at least 30 minutes a day. Eat those fruits and veggies. Drink more water.”
Your tip for a great smile?
“Chew sugar-free gum and drink water after that morning cup of coffee to decrease staining your teeth! Also, come visit your awesome dental hygienist for cleanings twice a year, in addition to daily brushing and flossing.“
