Why Dental Anxiety Is Costing You More, and How to Fix It
Few of us can say that we genuinely enjoy going to the dentist. Some of us are embarrassed because it’s been a while since we’ve seen a dentist. Others are downright fearful of the dentist. Whether it’s because of past experiences or the way media portrays them, the dentist can seem like such a bad place. But what if we told you that dental anxiety actually comes in all shapes and sizes and that you might suffer from it?
Many people struggle to see the dentist regularly enough. But what they don’t realize is that this avoidance costs significantly more time and money in the long run. Because of this, Nebraska Family Dentistry has made it a primary goal to help anxious patients feel comfortable and safe, and to educate our patients on the dangers of dental anxiety.
The True Cost of Dental Anxiety
You shouldn’t feel bad if you avoid the dentist. In fact, you should know that it’s a common behavior. In other words, you are not alone. Many people are afraid of the dentist, and we are compassionate towards that. Our dentists treat anxious patients with the utmost care, as we want to ensure your comfort.
While we are compassionate, we also understand the dangers of avoiding the dentist. When you don’t see your dentist regularly, they have no chance at preventing bigger, more expensive problems in your mouth. You should have your teeth cleaned twice a year. During these appointments, your dentist will look for any other problems with your teeth. If they can catch these problems early on, then it’s likely they can stop them in their tracks. That’s why if you aren’t having your teeth cleaned regularly, these problems will only get worse, leading to bigger, more expensive problems in the future.
How We Can Help
Over the years, Nebraska Family Dentistry has been able to develop amazing strategies in order to offer gentle and positive experience dentistry. Along with that, each Nebraska Family Dentistry team member has been specifically trained to offer personable and caring dental services. We’re well-known for our delicate dental care, and our calm, kind demeanor. Don’t take our word for it – ask any of our patients and they’ll say the same.
We value open communication. This means that if you’re embarrassed, scared, or feeling uneasy in any way, we want to listen. We’ve found great success when patients talk to our dentists about their concerns. This allows us to reassure you and help you get the treatment you’re expecting.
Specifically, we’ve worked out a few solutions to dental anxiety that our patients use often.
Our sedation dentistry puts patients at ease, so they can remain calm and feel comfortable with any treatment they receive. This is probably the most common type of dental anxiety treatment we use. Most sedation dentistry patients are even able to overcome their anxiety in time, since they’re able to endure the treatment they need!
Typically, we use a sedation dentistry pill which puts patients in a sleep-like state that they won’t likely remember. However, during procedures, patients can still move and respond but will be calm and relaxed. Even the most anxious patients find themselves relaxing comfortably while going through treatment.
Along with sedation dentistry, we always use a gentle injection to keep patients numb and comfortable.
Nebraska Family Dentistry is one of the few dental organizations that uses distraction dentistry to its advantage. We offer a handful of distractions so our patients have something to focus on while receiving treatment.
We offer blankets and pillows, headphones for listening to music, TVs, and other techniques to allow patients to do what makes them feel most at home.
Each of our locations is a proud proponent of anxiety-free dentistry. Our network of dental professionals has worked hard for the last several years to grow into this role. We believe that patients who feel connected to their dentists will seek out the best dental health possible, ultimately leading to improved overall health.
We’re here to help in any way we can. If you have questions, concerns, or comments about anxiety-free dentistry, don’t hesitate to give any of our locations a call. We’re glad to talk through anything you need.
